Regardless of where you are in your personal training journey. It will always be useful to have guaranteed ways of getting more clients. Below are a few methods you can add to your back pocket.
1. CREATIVE referrals
What do I mean by creative referrals? I'm sure you have exhausted your reach out to all your family and friends by now. If you haven't, go speak to those relatives and come back.
Now, you've exhausted that avenue. How do you get more clients through referrals? Reach out to your local healthcare providers. Break out those typing fingers and type into Google "Chiropractors near me." Hop on the phone and call every single doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist, chiropractor and dentist (YES DENTIST) in your area. Give them a few free PT sessions to show them you actually mean business.
Let them know you want to set-up a referral partnership. Be nice and vet the people you are calling the best you can. Referrals are an extension of your brand. You do NOT want to refer your clients to a random back-alley dentist who will harvest your client's organs (a bit of an exaggeration, but you know what I mean).
2. Partnerships with your Local Gym
You have your basic commercial gyms: Goodlife, LA Fitness, Lifetime etc. Then you have your local gyms sprinkled here and there. Develop a partnership with your local gym owner and be the GO TO Personal Trainer at that gym.
Imagine this, you will have access to every client that the gym signs up. Create a revenue share agreement with the gym owner. It's a win-win.
3. SEO Building for Your Website
I can guarantee you two things. One, SEO research and implementation is one of the most boring and tedious projects you can undertake as a business owner. Two, it is one of the most rewarding and ROI positive investments you will make (will bring you a bunch of new clients).
What do people do when they are looking for something? They use GOOGLE and type in "Best Personal Trainer in _________ (Insert City). Literally, click the first few links with high reviews and pick from there.
I will say this once. If you are not on the first page of google you will not be found. Put in the work and you will not regret working on your SEO. You will be getting clients reaching out to you without you having to lift a finger.
4. Paid Advertising
This can be incredibly intimidating. You're spending your hard earned money on something that could or could not work. Think of it this way, instead of buying that 5th flavor of protein when you have 4 half-full tubs left, opt for spending that $70 on some paid advertising.
Now, I can (and will) write a completely new article on how to use paid advertising. But it boils down to two categories: Traditional and Digital Advertising.
Traditional Advertising are things like: Radio, Television, Billboards, Posters & Direct Mail
Digital Advertising are things like: Social Media Advertising (FB, Instagram, Twitter etc), Google Adwords, and other Web Advertisements
Now in GENERAL, digital advertising is the way to go. But if you are in a town that has a very small amount of people and you think traditional is the way to go. Go for it. It all depends on circumstance and situation.
5. Free Advertising
Remember how I mentioned there are creative ways of getting referrals? There are also creative ways of getting free advertising.
You have your basic digital free advertising methods like Kijiji and Craigslist that every personal trainer advertises on. But make sure to utilize your local resources. Many cities have a digital marketplace where you can advertise your work on.
Find the most popular areas around you and find a post board where you can put you ad on. Get the brightest piece of paper you can find, print some testimonials and put your information on it. Plaster it all over the city. I can guarantee your local PT competitor won't do this. It's too much work.
Network around town, become friends with the local baristas, grocery store clerks and cashiers. They have small talk with everyone around town. Don't mainputlate them, but become very friendly with them and ask if they can spread the word for you. Maybe throw in a few free PT sessions in exchange for referrals. Your work is a networking game and once you become well networked you will have access to more resources than you will ever need.
